# What is Inbound calling?

Inbound calling is when customers phone a business, for support, bookings or enquiries, and the business answers.

An AI voice agent can answer inbound calls around the clock, handle common questions, book appointments and pass anything complex to a person. This is often called an AI receptionist.

The main design questions are: which questions the agent can answer from your knowledge base, when it should transfer, and how it behaves when it does not understand the caller.

## Common questions

Can an AI answer calls to my existing business number?

That depends on your telephony setup: usually the call is forwarded or routed to a number the AI platform controls.
