AI Calling Opening Lines That Work in India
The opening line that works is one sentence that says who is calling, from which company and why, then asks one easy question. In 2,053 real AI call transcripts from Indian businesses, 30% of people hung up within their first two replies, and openers that only asked "Am I speaking with…?" left callers asking who was calling almost twice as often. Below are the formula, eight ready scripts in Hindi, Hinglish and English, and the openers to stop using.

What is an opening line in AI calling?
The opening line, or intro message, is the first thing an AI voice agent says when the call connects. Unlike the rest of the script, it is usually spoken word for word, before the caller has said anything. That makes it the one part of the call you fully control, and the part where most hang-ups happen: in our data, 30% of people ended the call within their first two replies.
Why do the first five seconds matter so much?
Indian phone users get a lot of spam calls, so an unknown number has a few seconds to prove it's legitimate. When the opener doesn't do that, the caller spends their first turns working it out. "Kahan se bol rahe ho?", "which company?", "kis cheez ka payment?" came up in 7% of the calls we read, and the pitch stalled every time.
Naming the company roughly halves those questions. To be clear about what it doesn't do: over two months, it did not change how many calls ended in a booking. It removes a reason to hang up; the rest of the script has to give a reason to stay.
| First line | Calls | Caller asked who/why |
|---|---|---|
| Name + company + reason | 1,451 | 6% |
| Name check only | 602 | 11% |
Outbound calls from free and paid accounts, 9 Aug to 8 Oct 2026. Method in our research on why people hang up on AI calls. Upfirst found the same direction in about 450,700 inbound calls (Devdiscourse, July 2026).
How do you write an opening line that works?
Four parts, one sentence, under about 25 words:
- 1
Greet and say who you are
Use the caller's name and the agent's name: "Namaste {{callee_name}} ji, main Priya bol rahi hoon".
- 2
Name the company
Say the business name in the same sentence. Without it, callers asked who was calling almost twice as often (11% vs 6%).
- 3
Give the reason in one clause
Say why you are calling in terms the caller recognises: their order, their enquiry, their invoice, their appointment.
- 4
Ask one easy question
End with a single yes/no or either/or question the caller can answer in two words.
Put together: "Namaste Rahul ji, main Priya bol rahi hoon Sharma Motors se, aapki car service ke baare mein. Kya kal subah 11 baje theek rahega?"

Which opening lines should you avoid?
| Opener | What goes wrong | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| "Am I speaking with Rahul?" and nothing else | The caller has to ask who you are before anything happens. 11% did, against 6% when the company was named. | Add your company and reason to the same sentence. |
| "Aapki 36,000 ki payment pending hai." | An amount with no context sounds like a scam. Callers replied "kis cheez ka?" instead of a date. | Name the invoice, product or month before the amount. |
| "Hello Sir/Ma'am" or "bol raha/rahi hoon" | The intro is spoken word for word, so the agent says both options. | Use the caller's name, and pick one form for the agent. |
| "Good morning/afternoon/evening" | Same problem. It is read out as written. | Use "Namaste" or "Hello", which work at any hour. |
| A 40-word pitch before the first question | The caller can't interrupt politely, so they hang up instead. | Give one clause of context, then ask. |
| An English opener to a Hindi-speaking list | Callers asked "Can we talk in Hindi?" and the call restarted. | Open in the list's language, in everyday Hinglish. |

Hindi, Hinglish or English for the opener?
Open in the language of the list, and write it the way people speak. Hindi agents made 61% of calls on free-trial accounts, and callers answered in mixed Hindi and English whatever the agent used: "Ma'am EMI kal bhijwa dunga". Formal words like "bhugtan" or "pushti" sound like a government notice. "Payment" and "confirm" don't.
If your list is mixed, offer the choice in the first turn ("Hindi ya English, aap kismein comfortable hain?") and set a secondary language on the agent so it can switch. Full detail in AI voice agents in Hindi, Hinglish and Indian languages.
How do you test an opening line?
- Call yourself and two colleagues who weren't involved. Ask them one thing: "Who called, and why?"
- If anyone hesitates, the opener is missing the company or the reason.
- Run a small batch of 30 to 50 real contacts and read every transcript where the person hung up within two replies.
- Change one thing at a time. On Vyora you can split traffic between two versions of the agent and compare.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good opening line for an AI call in India?
One sentence that greets the caller by name, says who is calling and from which company, gives the reason, and ends with one easy question. For example: "Namaste Rahul ji, main Priya bol rahi hoon Sharma Motors se, aapki service booking ke baare mein. Kya kal 11 baje theek rahega?"
Should the AI agent say the company name first?
Yes. In 2,053 AI call transcripts from Indian businesses, callers had to ask who was calling in 11% of calls when the opener only checked their name, against 6% when it named the company. A separate study of about 450,700 inbound AI calls also linked naming the business in the greeting to fewer hang-ups. It removes friction; it will not rescue a weak offer.
Should I write the script in Hindi, Hinglish or English?
Write it the way your customers talk, which for most Indian consumer lists is everyday Hinglish. Use English words people actually use (payment, order, confirm) rather than formal Hindi (bhugtan, pushti). Write Hindi in Devanagari or plain Roman script, but don't mix scripts inside one sentence.
Should I ask "Do you have two minutes?"
Only after you have said who you are and why. Asked first, it gives the caller an easy "no" before they know what the call is about. Asked after the reason, it is a polite check that also works for sales and admission calls.
Should the agent say it is an AI?
It is a good idea and rarely hurts. Our transcripts show people hanging up over confusion about who is calling, not over automation. See our guide on whether customers can tell they are talking to an AI voice agent.
