What is Conversational AI?

Conversational AI is the family of technologies that let software hold natural back-and-forth conversations by text or voice, including speech recognition, language understanding and response generation.

It is the umbrella behind chatbots, voice bots and AI voice agents. Voice versions add speech-to-text at the front and text-to-speech at the back, with a language model in the middle that decides what to say.

What separates good systems from poor ones is mostly context: remembering earlier answers, following business rules, using tools (calendar, CRM, payment links) and knowing when to escalate.

Common questions

Is conversational AI the same as generative AI?
Not exactly. Modern conversational AI often uses generative models, but it also needs speech technology, business logic and integrations around them.
