What is Data residency?
Data residency is the requirement or choice to store data inside a particular country, here India.
India's DPDP Act generally allows personal data to be transferred abroad except to countries the government restricts, but some sectors have stricter rules; for example, the RBI requires payment-system data to be stored only in India.
Ask any calling vendor where call audio, transcripts and customer data are stored, who can access them, and what happens when you leave.
Common questions
- Must AI call data stay in India?
- Not as a general rule under the DPDP Act, but regulated sectors such as payments can require it. Check your sector's rules.
